What is the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route, affectionately nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. As the only route offering dormitory-style hut accommodations, it has long been favored by trekkers seeking a more comfortable climbing experience.
Often considered the “easiest” route up Kilimanjaro, Marangu attracts many first-time trekkers and those who prefer sleeping in huts rather than tents. Its well-defined path and gradual slope (until the final summit push) make it accessible to determined hikers without technical climbing experience.
Marangu Route Quick Facts
- Distance: Approximately 70 km (43 miles) round trip
- Duration: 5-6 days (5 is standard, 6 recommended for better acclimatization)
- Starting Altitude: 1,840m (6,038 ft) at Marangu Gate
- Summit Altitude: 5,895m (19,341 ft) at Uhuru Peak
- Difficulty Level: Moderate to challenging
- Success Rate: Approximately 50% on 5-day itineraries, 85% on 6-day itineraries
- Accommodation: Dormitory-style mountain huts
- Best Time to Climb: January-March and June-October
- Nickname: “Coca-Cola Route” (due to its popularity and relative comfort)
Why Choose the Marangu Route?
Advantages
Comfortable Accommodations: The only Kilimanjaro route offering hut accommodations instead of tents, providing shelter from the elements
Well-Established Infrastructure: Solar-powered lighting in huts, dining facilities, and proper toilets
Lower Physical Demands: Generally considered less physically demanding than other routes with gradual slopes for most of the journey
Budget-Friendly: Typically less expensive than other routes due to shorter duration and infrastructure
Beautiful Scenery: Passes through lush rainforest, alpine meadows, and lunar landscapes
Considerations
Higher Traffic: As the most popular route, it can get crowded during peak seasons
Same Path Up and Down: Uses identical path for ascent and descent, offering less diverse landscapes than circular routes
Acclimatization Concerns: The standard 5-day itinerary has a quick ascent profile, making altitude sickness more common
Success Rates: Lower summit success rates on 5-day itineraries compared to longer routes (we strongly recommend the 6-day option)
Detailed Marangu Route Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
- Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Montane forest
- Altitude Gain: 1,840m (6,038 ft) to 2,720m (8,923 ft)
Your journey begins at Marangu Gate, where you’ll complete registration formalities with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. The trail winds through lush rainforest teeming with birdlife, colobus monkeys, and unique flora. Watch for the beautiful Impatiens kilimanjari flower, found only on Mount Kilimanjaro. After a gentle ascent, you’ll reach Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
- Altitude Gain: 2,720m (8,923 ft) to 3,720m (12,205 ft)
After breakfast, the trail leads through the upper boundary of the forest and into the moorland zone. The vegetation transitions dramatically as you ascend, with giant lobelias and giant groundsels becoming prominent features of the landscape. On clear days, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo. Horombo Hut offers comfortable accommodation with stunning vistas of the plains below.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
- Altitude Gain: 3,720m (12,205 ft) to 4,700m (15,420 ft)
Today’s trek takes you through the alpine desert zone, characterized by sparse vegetation and a harsh landscape. You’ll cross the lunar-like saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, with stunning panoramic views in all directions. Kibo Hut sits at the base of the summit cone, where you’ll have an early dinner before resting for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
- Summit Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) ascent + 16 km (10 miles) descent
- Summit Time: 6-8 hours ascent + 4-6 hours descent

Your summit day begins around midnight with a challenging uphill climb in darkness. You’ll zigzag up to Hans Meyer Cave before tackling the steepest section to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From here, it’s a gentler slope around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll witness the magnificent sunrise over Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved overnight stay.

The final day involves a long but gentle descent through the moorland and rainforest zones. You’ll return to Marangu Gate where you’ll receive your summit certificates – gold for reaching Uhuru Peak and green for climbers who reached Gilman’s Point. Our Moon & Tours Safari team will transport you back to your accommodation in Moshi for a celebratory dinner and well-earned rest.
6-Day Marangu Route Itinerary (Recommended)
For better acclimatization and a significantly higher summit success rate, we strongly recommend the 6-day Marangu itinerary, which includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This additional day allows your body to adjust to the altitude and increases your chances of reaching the summit.
The 6-day itinerary follows the same route but includes an extra day (Day 3) at Horombo Hut (3,720m) with a short acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Peak before returning to Horombo for the night.
Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route
While Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, certain periods offer better conditions:
- January to March: Less crowded, warm and clear mornings with potential afternoon clouds and occasional rain
- June to October: Driest months with clear skies, very stable weather but colder at night
- December to February: Warmer months with clear skies, perfect for avoiding the coldest summit temperatures
The short rainy seasons (November and April-May) bring more challenging conditions but also fewer crowds.
